STATEMENT BY THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ABDULLAH GÜL ON THE OCCASION OF HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

10 December 2004

Address by the Prime Minister of the Republic of  Turkey to the OECD Council (Paris, 21 October 2004)

A Mediterranean Odyssey-

Sepharadi Culture Week

Ottawa

November 14th –19th

The Embassies of Greece, Israel, Spain and Turkey in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Beth Shalom Congregation and the Communauté Sepharade Unifée Du Québec  joined together in order to share with the Ottawa community an exciting Sepharadi Cultural week commencing November 14th  through the 19th, 2004- A series of events filled with colours, flavours and traditions of Sepharadi life in the Mediterranean.

The festival will open with a Spanish and Ladino Odyssey concert. Each Embassy and Ambassador will host one evening of the following events, at different venues throughout the City. Each event will feature the respective history and traditions of Sepharadi culture in their country, showcasing Andalusian, Greek, Ladino, Israeli, Spanish and Turkish music.

A Turkish evening will be held on Monday, November 15th, 2004 with a lecture by Naim Guleryuz, Founder and Curator of the Jewish Museum in Istanbul, a short documentary on Sephardim in Turkey followed by a music concert by the “Constantinople Ensemble” from Montreal.

The week will   include special performers, musicians and scholars expressing the sights and sounds of Mediterranean Sepharadi culture.  The Mediterranean Odyssey will conclude with a Sepharadi kaballat shabat service and dinner at Beth Shalom Congregation followed by a guest lecture.

Sepharadi Jews (Jews of Spain) and their culture have influenced many regions across the Mediterranean. For half a Millennium until 1492, Spain was the world’s cultural and scientific centre, where Jews, Muslims and Christians lived in a spirit of coexistence and mutual respect. The Jewish Sepharadi community was a major contributor to this cultural renaissance, also known as the “Golden Age”.

General Information on Visa Requirement To Turkey

Canadian ordinary (personal) passport holders require a visa for Turkey. The visa can be obtained either from this Embassy or  before entering  Turkey if the purpose of the trip is pleasure, business or attending a meeting. (Holders of Canadian official passports can obtain their visa only from the Embassy.) Due to the high volume of applications for Turkish visas, the Consular Section is not in a position to provide a specific duration for visa processing.  Therefore we strongly  suggest  that you apply  for visas, well before the planned visit to Turkey.

1- Visa fee at the point of entry is US$60.00 or Euro 45 (cash). This visa allows the holder to stay in Turkey for a maximum period of 90 days and is valid for multiple entries during that period.

2- A visa can be obtained from the Embassy of Turkey in Ottawa at a cost of C$75.00 for a single entry or C$150.00 for multiple entries both valid for 90 days. Visas not used within 90 days from the date of issue will have to be renewed. The visa fee is applied per person, not per passport, and applies to children listed on parent's passport. The validity period of the passport should cover at least six months from the date of the issuance of the visa.

The following are required from Canadian citizens if they choose to obtain their visas from this Embassy, prior to their departure. Allow 2 working days for processing.

· Passport (original)
·Fee: C$75.00 (single entry) / C$150.00  (multiple entry) as a money order or certified
cheque payable to Turkish Embassy (personal cheques are not accepted / cash is accepted for applications in person).
· Self-addressed, stamped envelope or pre-paid return courier (not required for
applications in person)
·Filled-out application form

-If the planned stay exceeds 90 days or the individual intends to study, work or be engaged in any kind of gainful employment in Turkey, an appropriate visa must be obtained. An application for this purpose has to be made to this Embassy. The Embassy does not provide assistance in finding employment in Turkey.

Holders of Canadian official passports can obtain their visa only from the Embassy. A diplomatic note from the passport office is required for official travels. Canadian special passports are subject to visa fee if the intended trip is for pleasure.

-Holders of Canadian travel documents must obtain a visa from this Embassy prior to departure. Application should be made well in advance. The Embassy should be contacted for detailed information. Visa fees applied on Canadian passports are non-refundable.

Time for rethinking on Cyprus

Sunday, April 24, 2005

Those who talk about ‘reunification’ seem to imagine that a settlement could transform the island of Cyprus at a stroke into something like Belgium or Wales. The truth is that there would always be the risk of ‘Lebanonization’

QUESTION: During his contacts in Athens, EU Term President Netherlands' Prime Minister, Balkenende has stated that Turkey's recognition of the Greek Cypriots before December 17 is necessary. I'm referring to the statements in the news reports. It is understood that the pressure on Turkey in this regard is increasing. What is the latest situation on the recognition of the Greek Cypriots by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots?

ANSWER: Our views in this regard have already been made public at the highest level. However, I think it will be very useful if I repeat them here. As it was expressed in the statement made after the consultations between our Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the President of the TRNC Mr. Denktaş, Prime Minister Mr. Talat, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Serdar Denktaş last Friday, Turkey and the TRNC regard the recognition issue only as a part of the final and comprehensive settlement to be reached under the mission of good-offices of the UN Secretary General, and are determined to actively work for such a solution.
