QUESTION: During his contacts in Athens, EU Term President Netherlands' Prime Minister, Balkenende has stated that Turkey's recognition of the Greek Cypriots before December 17 is necessary. I'm referring to the statements in the news reports. It is understood that the pressure on Turkey in this regard is increasing. What is the latest situation on the recognition of the Greek Cypriots by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots? ANSWER: Our views in this regard have already been made public at the highest level. However, I think it will be very useful if I repeat them here. As it was expressed in the statement made after the consultations between our Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the President of the TRNC Mr. Denktaş, Prime Minister Mr. Talat, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Serdar Denktaş last Friday, Turkey and the TRNC regard the recognition issue only as a part of the final and comprehensive settlement to be reached under the mission of good-offices of the UN Secretary General, and are determined to actively work for such a solution. .::. .
