The inter-connected Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), consolidated by the Millenium Declaration adopted at the conclusion of the Millenium Summit in 2000, comprise eradicating extreme hunger and poverty, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combatting infectious diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability and developing global partnerships.
MDG monitoring takes place at global and country levels. At the global level the UN General Assembly takes action on the annual reports submitted by the UN Secretary General on the world-wide implementation of the Millenium Declaration. At the country level, the aim of the national MDG reports is to engage political leaders and top decision-makers and to mobilize civil society, the general public and the media in a debate on human development.
In the report that you have in hand, the five-year implementation phase of Turkey's Millenium Development Goals has been analysed by making a cross-referance to all the relevant targets and indicators and through a highly participatory process involving representatives of the public-private institutions and civil society.
An identical analytical approach has been followed for the examination of Turkey's eight development goals in this study. This report presents the current situation in each of the goals, as well as the developments expected in the forthcoming years. Areas where there are deficiencies have also been explored, together with the expectations for the future. All sources of data used are indicated in the report.
This first MDG report shows that Turkey, overall, is well on the way to meeting and even exceeding the goals by 2015; however particular challenges exist and continued efforts will be necessary if Turkey is to meet Goals 1 (eradication of poverty and hunger); 3 (gender equality); 4 (child mortality) and 5 (maternal mortality).
Reaching the MDGs calls for a process of awareness-raising and consultation with the general public and amongst policy and decision makers, to sustain the momentum needed for Turkey to stay on its current promising course. Go back to Contents |
