Kanada Totemi

Ottawa School of Art’ın, 1992 yılındaki çok olumlu girişimi ile, Kanada’nın kültürel mozayiğini simgeleyen Kanada Totemi, 2 Mayıs 1993 günü Byward Market’de okulun önünde yapılan bir törenle, dönemin belediye başkanı Jacquelin Holzman tarafından açıldı.

Kanada’daki etnik grupların sembollerini taşıyan bu totem, British  Columbia’daki Kitanmax School öğrencileri tarafından, üzerine Kanada yerlilerinin sembolü işlendikten sonra Ottawa’ya getirildi. Daha sonra Ottawa School of Art öğrencileri, etnik grupların  bir Kanada teması ile birleştirilmiş sembollerini işleyerek totemi tamamladılar.

Bu totemde Kanada Türk toplumunun da temsil edilmesi, Türk Kanada Kültür Derneğinin o dönem yönetimi üstlenmiş olan kurulu* tarafından kabul edildi.ve ambleme totemde yer verilebilmesi için de derneğimiz, diğer kuruluşlar gibi, parasal katkıda bulundu. Bu totemde yer alan tasarım Toronto’da yerleşik sanatçılarımızdan Necati Onat’ın eseridir.

The Totem Pole of Canada

The Ottawa School of Art students took part in the carving of  a totem pole created by the students at the Kitanmax School in British Columbia. The image of a raven, a symbol of the aboriginal people, was carved at the base of the pole and then shipped to the Ottawa School of Art.  Started in 1992, this project was completed a year later and unveiled on 2 May 1993 by then Mayor Jacquelin Holzman.

Named The Totem Pole of Canada, it represents the country’s cultural mosaic and stands permanently in front of the school in the Byward Market. 

The Turkish-Canadian Cultural Association, along with other ethnic communities, was approached by the school to have their symbol carved on the totem pole and donations were accepted as part of their fund-raising efforts. 

The design for the Turkish community which combines symbols of both countries was created by Necati Onat, a Turkish-Canadian artist residing in Toronto.
